News : Oyo Produces One More Bishop

The Holy Father Pope Francis, today, announced Rev. Fr. John Akin Oyejola as bishop of Osogbo, (area 12,000, population 1,500,000, Catholics 62,000, priests 63, religious 71), Nigeria. The bishop-elect was born in Awe, Nigeria in 1963 and was ordained a priest in 1991. He holds a diploma in humanities and a master's degree in pastoral leadership from All Hallow's College, Dublin, Ireland, and a doctorate in marriage and family therapy from St. Mary's College, California, U.S.A. He has served in a number of pastoral roles, including parish vicar, parish priest, diocesan director for vocations, diocesan chaplain for the young, diocesan director for the Biblical Apostolate, member of the council of consultors, national director of Religious Educators in Nigeria; and regional director of the Pastoral Institute. He is currently parish priest of the St. Stephen Catholic Church, Oyo, and director of the diocesan Centre for Family Pastoral Ministry.
